VISTA, Calif. — Actor Shelley Malil will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin star was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with possible parole for stabbing his ex-girlfriend more than 20 times at her Vista, Calif. home in August 2008, the San Diego-Union Tribune reports.
In October, Malil was convicted of attempted premeditated murder for the violent attack on Kendra Beebe, whose two children were home at the time. He was also found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon on David Maldonado, a local musician who was with Beebe the night of the stabbing.
"Despite plunging a butcher knife into my body 23 times in an attempt to murder me, I am here. I am alive," Beebe told the court at the sentencing. "Despite the wicked scars he inflicted on my body from head to toe, I am alive and I have my freedom, my family, my friends and my future."
Malil, 45, apologized for his actions in court and said he would try to find the "road to redemption" while locked up.
"What I did to Kendra, I don't even have the words to express my remorse," he said. "Kendra Beebe did not deserve anything that happened to her."
Malil could be eligible for parole in nine to 10 years.
