HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Derek Hough is taking a break from Dancing With the Stars.
The three-time DWTS champ is skipping season 12 in order to shoot a movie role, he confirmed Monday in an interview with People magazine.
Hough, 25, will star in Cobu 3D, which is scheduled to begin filming in New York and Toronto this spring. In the movie, he'll play a New Orleans street dancer who moves to New York and falls for an Asian drummer (played by Korean pop star BoA).
"People will see a much edgier side of me and these other styles of dance I'm capable of doing," he said of the film, described as a Romeo and Juliet-style love story.
The dancer may be taking his moves to the big screen, but rest assured he'll be back soon.
"I will be making it back to Dancing With the Stars in the fall," he told the mag. "I'm just taking a little break and taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist."
Hough has appeared on DWTS since season 5, winning mirror ball trophies with Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Grey.
