NEW YORK – "Give Up Tomorrow," a documentary about the plight of an allegedly innocent man imprisoned in the Philippines, has won the audience award for the Tribeca Film Festival.
The film chronicles the highly publicized case of culinary student Paco Larranaga, who was arrested as a 19-year-old in 1997 for the kidnap, rape and murder of two sisters. He was convicted despite having dozens of witnesses vouch for his whereabouts on another Philippine island hundreds of miles away.
Michael Collins' film had earlier been a special mention in the festival's jury-picked awards.
Festival Executive Director Nancy Schafer said she hoped the film "will raise awareness of Paco's plight and lead to his freedom."
