LAS VEGAS — Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan was crowned Miss America 2011 Saturday night, becoming the first winner in the pageant's 90-year history to hail from the cornhusker state.
At age 17, Scanlan also became the youngest woman to be honored with the title since 1921. She performed "White Water Chopped Sticks" on the piano during the talent portion of the competition, eventually outlasting 52 other beauty queens at the pageant held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
In addition to winning the coveted title, the Gering native took home a $50,000 scholarship. After her reign is over, Scanlan will attend Patrick Henry College in Virginia, where she'll begin her aspirations to become a judge and eventually a politician some day.
Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won $25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for third place.
