For so long, PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive, Chris Hemsworth, has been the mascot for Team Long Hair Can Be Hot on Guys. (Check out 10 photos of his sun-streaked locks here to see what we mean.) And much like the Samson of Biblical legend, we have assumed that Hemsworth has derived his Thor-like strength (and by strength we mean hotness) from his famously floppy locks. But now that he’s gone short, we’re forced to confront everything we once thought to be true.

But as it turns out, so did Hemsworth himself. “I was nervous,” he said on Live With Kelly & Michael about making the cut. “I’m a Leo so it was a little bit like losing my mane. I felt like I was losing my powers.”
So why did he decide to chop it all off? “It got long and messy and time consuming,” he said. “It’s like photoshoot hair — if you have someone following you around doing it for you, it’s cool, but it’s not practical.” (He then caused a frenzy in the audience by joking, “I got it backstage in a bag so I’m gonna hand it out.”)

Most intriguing to us? That Chris’s cut seems to have come at a time when Liam has decided to grow out his own long and luxurious hair. Is this a pact they have to keep the balance of power (and by power we mean hotness) intact, in which one’s long hair can’t survive while the other’s lives? Now that you can do a direct long-to-short comp-hair-ison, does it influence your Hemsworth brother prefence? And what does the bonus Hemsworth think about all this? Weigh in below.
