It’s been a blockbuster past few weeks for out-of-control, oversize engagement rings. If you weren’t already blinded by Mariah Carey’s whopping 35-carat, emerald-cut stunner last week, just wait until you catch a glimpse of the ring Jerry Hall, 59, received from billionaire fiancé Rupert Murdoch, 84. We’ll just say, we don’t blame the former model for wearing shades every time her hand comes in contact with direct sunlight.

The former Mrs. Jagger, and star of the greatest reality show known to mankind, stepped out in the Richmond section of London last week, marking her first public appearance since the announcement that she and the 35th most powerful man in the world got engaged right after the Golden Globes. So, of course, all eyes were glued on Hall’s ring finger trying to figure out if the diamond is quite as outrageous as we’d all expect.

And Jerry’s new rock definitely did not disappoint. While it’s certainly not as insanely flashy as Mariah’s iceberg-sized solitaire, it’s no slouch either. Though it’s difficult to tell from these initial photos, Murdoch appears to have chosen an unusually shaped (read: very expensive and rare) marquise diamond for his fourth proposal set on a simple platinum band. Sure, it probably doesn’t boast as many carats as Mariah’s show-stopping little number, but what it may lack in flash, it more than makes up for in personality. Besides, we’ve got a feeling the billionaire might have more than a few jewelry-related surprised up his sleeve for his newly betrothed.
What do you think of Jerry Hall’s engagement ring? Do you like the marquise diamond or do you prefer a different cut?
