Men’s red carpet style tends to be a little blah. As Chris Rock so aptly pointed out in his opening monologue at tonight’s Oscars, the reason no one asks male actors what they’re wearing is it’s always a sea of black tuxes, “Every guy is wearing the same thing. If George Clooney showed up with a lime green tux on and a swan coming out of his a**, somebody would go ‘What you wearing George?” But not every man at tonight’s Oscars fit that stereotype, a few such as Kevin Hart, Jared Leto, Pharrell Williams, and Jacob Tremblay, all found fun ways to spice up their standard red carpet uniform.

Kevin Hart kicked off the evening of male stars breaking their typically staid fashion uniform, wearing this accented tuxedo jacket edged in glittering black rhinestones that put his date’s award show bling to shame. The comedian proved he’s also totally on trend, fitting right in with the handful of fully sequined gowns we also saw on tonight’s red carpet.

And, of course, Jared Leto isn’t one to be left out of some weird suit action. The actor also wore a tuxedo jacket accented with a contrasting red piping, opting for a matching flower in lieu of a bowtie. Jacob and Pharrell, on the other hand, chose subtler means of differentiating their looks, with the young Room star pairing his tux with some very snazzy Star Wars-themed socks, while the consummate fashion plate musician nonchalantly cuffed his trousers and rocked his loafers sans socks.
But most importantly, let’s all cross our fingers that George Clooney takes Chris Rock’s outfit suggestion and makes next year’s Oscars a whole lot more sartorially interesting.
