When it comes to beauty, First Lady Michelle Obama has always been open to experimentation. She’s gone for bouncy blowouts and stick-straight strands, a short bob and choppy bangs, and a variety of makeup looks form classic liner to smoky shadows. And in recent years, she’s even been open to the occasional bold nail look, forgoing her typical square, taupe mani for a neon or longer tip.
But we were still surprised to see (via some “Single Ladies” hand-dancing) the style she sported for James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke: elongated, pale lavender almost-talons — super on trend and Snapchat-friendly. We decided to look back at the evolution of the First Lady’s manicure that got us to this point.

But those bold shades were enough to hold her over until 2015, when she really went wild with color. Obama played with not just baby blue polish, but also green and pastel yellow, all of which she paired with her go-to square shape.
Fast forward to 2016, and FLOTUS is proving that her trendy sense of style shines through in her beauty choices as well by switching up her signature manicure for the long, rounded shape that’s super in style right now. The better to show off her pastel purple, right?
