So long, man buns. The hottest questionable hair trend on Hollywood hotties is here, and it’s bizarre beards. Bushy, bold and highly divisive, the look started in back in August with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto and Brody Jenner. It resurfaced on Andrew Garfield and made an appearance on Matthew McConaughey at the Golden Globes. The latest to partake in the trend? The normally baby-faced Ryan Gosling.

The new dad has kept a low profile since the birth of his daughter, but on a rare date night with Eva Mendes he stepped out with coiffed hair, a sharp suit and surprisingly ungroomed beard — a major change from his typically slightly-stubbly visage. It may not have attained Garfield’s great lengths yet, but we still consider Ryan’s twirly mustache/defined goatee/scraggly undergrowth unkempt enough to make our “Bad Beards” list (because it definitely reached The Notebook‘s “depressed without Allie” phase).

We can’t quite figure out why the increase in ridiculous male grooming. Are they all really for upcoming roles? Perhaps there are a lot of Paul Bunyan biopics in the works? Did they all just really love No Shave November? These are the important questions we just can’t get out of our heads. At least Gosling has the excuse of a newborn to keep him up all night — and too tired to reach for the razor. [Editor’s note: Yes, we know many of these are for roles. Just being silly — hot guys with wild facial hair will do that to us.]
