Like many stars, Uma Thurman has perfected the closed-mouthed, red carpet grin. But there’s a bigger reason behind the star’s go-to expression. Thurman revealed she was bullied about her smile as a young child.

“I’m enjoying getting older because I feel I didn’t appreciate being pretty when I was younger,” she told Hello! magazine (via the Daily Mail) in a recent interview. “I felt terrible. When I was 10, someone told me I had an ugly smile, so I spent the whole of my younger years feeling embarrassed and never smiling with my mouth open. But what are you going to do?”

Thurman has since learned to overcome any negative critiques (she even shares a big happy grin sometimes on the carpet) about her apperance. She proved this last month, when her beauty look at The Slap N.Y.C. premiere had people speculating about plastic surgery, which she calmly dismissed as “weird.”
“I’ve been doing this [acting] for years and years and years, and people say things nice and they say things mean, and it’s just like, whatever,” she told Savannah Guthrie on The Today Show. “You take the good with the bad.”
