Zosia Mamet on Her Style: 'I've Always Been a Pretty Intense Tomboy'

By Celebrity News Wire on June 15, 2016

Zosia Mamet plays the fast-talking, quick-witted and overly accessorized Shoshanna Shapiro on the hit HBO show, Girls, but off-screen, the actress is so far separated from her character (think: easygoing, down-to-earth and super casual). We had the opportunity to sit down with the star to chat stress, sweat (more on that later!) and Shosh!

While Mamet, 28, will be the first to tell you just how much she differs from Shoshanna (like polar opposites), for this year’s CFDA Awards, the actress hit the red carpet sporting a sparkling, ’70s-inspired red scarf wrapped around her head created by her date Gigi Burris, which had us immediately drawing comparisons to Shosh’s love for hair accessories.

But when asked about the look, Mamet was quick to dispel resemblances to her character.

“I salute [Shoshanna] in all of her hair choices, but they are definitely not ones I would make for myself,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I think that was probably something she wouldn’t be caught dead wearing, but I happen to wear things like that a lot in my personal life. It’s a fun little accessory to tie a scarf up in your head and to also hide my very dirty hair, but I don’t think that I would call that a Shoshanna hair accessory. It’s sort of opposite of the spectrum for her.”

And while Mamet is nothing like the ultra-girlie Shoshanna, she respects her quirkiness.

“I wouldn’t consider myself a girly girl. I think [Shoshanna and I] are pretty opposite in that regard,” Mamet says. “I respect all of her [beauty] choices and I admire them, but no, I’ve always been a pretty intense tomboy, especially when I was little. I was always the little girl who was playing in the dirt and wanted to wear backwards hats, had short hair and things like that.”

But would she return to Shosh’s original brunette hair hue (she’s been every shade under the sun — from gray to platinum)? Probably not, Mamet says, as she’s having fun as a blonde (as one does!).

“I definitely had some fun trying different colors, but my hair didn’t have so much fun with it,” she tells PeopleStyle. “It’s hard on your hair to change that much. I’m going to try and stick with this for a little while. I love being blonde — it’s really fun.”

When she’s not filming, Mamet loves to unwind at home, which, she says, helps combat daily stress. And she’s talking about that stress (and the pesky sweat that inevitably comes with it), which effects even those in Hollywood, thanks to her recent partnership with Secret deodorant.

“I was really intrigued by this campaign [because] I feel like stress for today’s human in general, but also women in general, is a particularly real issue that we all face whether we are a stay-at-home mom or a head of a Fortune 500 company — whether we’re 20 or 50,” she says. “And so it was something that had been sort of like an issue I’ve been passionate about for a long time. I wrote about it a bunch when I was writing for Glamour. It felt really pertinent, relevant and something that everybody could relate to.”

Her favorite way to de-stress? A little yoga sesh in-between scenes, she says.

“I do [yoga] sometimes while I’m filming if I have a break,” she tells PeopleStyle. “One of the reasons I love it so much is because all you need is this tiny mat … You can be at your stressed limit, and if you get yourself on a yoga mat, it’s incredible how within 90 seconds of moving your body and breathing, you’ve suddenly just grounded yourself a little bit. But I also find that snuggling my boyfriend and my dog really help, especially my dog in a pretty big way.”
