Zoë Kravitz stars as the fierce and proud Christina in the upcoming film Insurgent, and it appears the actress has a lot in common with her character.

The actress (and daughter of Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz) was at Wall Miami last night to promote her Ocean Drive Magazine cover, on which she models long braids, and she had strong thoughts about the recent controversy regarding Zendaya’s similar style on the Oscars red carpet. (To recap: Giuliana Rancic said she looked like she smelled of “patchouli oil and weed” on E!’s Fashion Police, Zendaya responded on Twitter, and dozens of celebrities came out in support. Oh, and Kelly Osbourne quit.)
Kravitz’s take? “Black women have been wearing their hair like this forever and I think it’s really sad that it’s even a conversation that we all need to be having,” she said. “I don’t know if we’re all supposed to have short hair or straight hair … This is the way we are.”

Of Rancic, the 25-year-old (who attended the Vanity Fair Oscars party with her mom, both looking super-chic in glam dresses and similar hairstyles) said, “[She] can just keep her opinions to herself or not get it. It’s not my problem.”
Does she think the uproar caused the style to be looked at in another light? “I think it’s just about black women being able to be who they are and people are getting that or not getting that,” she said. “But I don’t think we should have to change the way we look at all, depending on what’s in fashion.”
The star (and lead singer of the band Lolawolf) also chatted about her friend and costar Shailene Woodley and the difference between their offscreen and onscreen relationship. While Kravitz’s character was Woodley’s protector in the first Divergent film, Kravitz says in real life, “Shailene’s a badass, she doesn’t need anyone else to protect her!” And as the new film sees both women get stronger, as does their real-life bond. “I think we protect each other, that’s what girlfriends have to do for each other,” she said.
Do you agree with Kravitz? Are you excited for the next movie?
