SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Shelley Malil, who starred in the box-office smash "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," was arrested yesterday on suspicion of stabbing his former girlfriend more than 20 times Sunday night.
The 43-year-old actor turned himself into authorities at 6:15 p.m., after taking a southbound Amtrak train from Los Angeles to Oceanside, sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust told the San Diego Union-Tribune. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, mayhem and burglary.
The stabbing took place at his ex-girlfriend's house in San Marcos, Calif., which is located north of San Diego. Neighbors reported hearing a woman screaming around 9 p.m. The unidentified female was found with multiple stab wounds and cuts on her face. She is expected to survive, Brust said.
According to authorities, the couple had recently broken up.
Brust said Malil's friends and family persuaded him to surrender yesterday. He was planning to meet his attorney when he arrived in Oceanside, but authorities stepped in to arrest him prior to that.
In addition to the 2005 comedy, which starred Steve Carell, Malil has appeared in such films as "My Favorite Martian" and "Collateral Damage," in addition to television roles on "ER," "Seinfeld," "The West Wing" and "NYPD Blue."
