HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Actor Ron Silver, who won a Tony Award for his role as a Hollywood producer in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow," died Sunday at the age of 62.
"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning," Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped found, told The Associated Press. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years."
Silver won his Tony Award in 1988, an honor that came one year after he picked up his first Emmy nomination for "Billionaire Boys Club."
The New York City native also earned an Emmy nod for his recurring role as a slick strategist on the NBC series "The West Wing." Other television credits included "Veronica's Closet," "Chicago Hope" and "Wiseguy."
Silver also appeared on the big screen in such movies as "Ali," "Reversal of Fortune," "Enemies: A Love Story," "Silkwood" and "Semi-Tough."
He is survived by his ex-wife, Lynne Miller, along with his son, Adam, and daughter, Alexandra.
