HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Alexa Ray Joel is thanking her fans for their support after being rushed to the hospital in early December when she consumed several pills of the homeopathic medication Traumeel.
"I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of love and support," the 24-year-old singer wrote Thursday on her Facebook page. "It's certainly been a whirlwind of a month, but reading all of your encouraging posts has never failed to cheer me up!!!"
The New York City native, who is the daughter of pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, also said she has "many exciting new developments for the New Year," including helping others deal with the same heartbreak problems that she's been dealing with. Joel, who has reportedly battled depression since breaking up with her former bandmate, Jimmy Riot, in January 2008, said she plans to "help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression."
Said Joel: "Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets 'swept under the carpet.' I hope to bring this topic more to light... I'm even going back to school for Psychology in hopes to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face... after all, there's nothing more fascinating than the human mind and it's respective conditions..."
Joel is the only child of the "Piano Man" crooner and Vacation star, who divorced in 1994 after nine years of marriage.
