GLOUCESTER, Mass. — The alleged drunk driver whose vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James last Friday night is thankful there were no serious injuries, her defense attorney said Tuesday.
Lucille Gatchell, 64, crossed the center line in her station wagon and struck the couple's SUV, which was being driven by 55-year-old Mark Hussey, in Gloucester, Mass. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the collision.
On Tuesday, Gatchell was arraigned in District Court, where she was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and a marked lanes violation. She had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent — more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the Associated Press.
"Miss Gatchell is very relieved that no one was injured," Gatchell's attorney, Benjamin Richard, said following the arraignment, according to the Boston Herald. "She also wants to express her gratitude to Ms. Bullock and Mr. James for what she understands was their concern for her well being after the accident."
The 43-year-old Bullock, who married her "Monster Garage" host husband on July 16, 2005, is no stranger to survival. On Dec. 20, 2000, she survived the crash of a chartered business jet at Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming.
The actress is currently in Massachusetts shooting the romantic comedy "The Proposal."
