HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are offering their support to victims of Tuesday's devastating earthquake in Haiti.
"We are devastated by the news from Haiti," the couple said in a joint statement. "We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter."
An estimated 3 million people may be in need of help after the 7.0 earthquake, in which thousands were likely killed across the impoverished capital. Jean has since traveled back home to help his family and native country. He urged others to assist in one of two ways: donate $5 to his Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund by texting "Yele" to 501501 (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or visit www.yele.org and click on donate.
Jolie, 34, and Pitt, 46, donated more than $6 million to charities in 2008, according to a tax return for the couple's Jolie-Pitt Foundation that was obtained in November by The Hollywood Reporter. Among the top groups on the receiving end of the couple's charitable efforts were Global Health ($2 million), Human Rights Watch ($1 million) and Pitt's own Make it Right Foundation ($1 million).
