PARIS — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcomed the birth of their baby twins on Saturday, the Associated Press confirms.
Dr. Michel Sussmann said the actress gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Caesarean section around 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
The couple's son weighed just over five pounds, while their daughter weighed in at five pounds.
"Everything is going well," Sussmann told AP. "The mother, the babies, the father are doing marvelously well."
The doctor told AP that the Cesarean was moved forward "for medical reasons" so that the babies could be born "in the best conditions." He also said Jolie is expected to remain hospitalized for a few days.
The 33-year-old Jolie checked into the Lenval Hospital in Nice on July 1, which left many wondering if the movie star had encountered a medical emergency.
"Her hospitalization at this stage in her pregnancy is totally normal for a patient who had a Caesarean (section) during her first pregnancy," Sussmann told reporters at the time.
The twins are the fifth and sixth children for Jolie and her beau, 44-year-old actor Brad Pitt. The superstar couple is already proud parents to three adopted children — Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, and Zahara, 3. They also have one biological daughter, Shiloh, 2.
The middle name of the couple's new daughter is in honor of Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away from cancer in January 2007.
