HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Anne Hathaway will being seeing plenty of rainbows in the future.
The 26-year-old actress has been tapped to play Judy Garland in both film and stage adaptations of the biography, "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland," Weinstein Co. boss Harvey Weinstein announced Monday.
Weinstein set the wheels in motion by optioning the rights to the 2000 biography, penned by Gerald Clarke. Details on the dual projects were limited, but the role is definitely a coup for the talented singer and actress, who is coming off a best actress Oscar nod for "Rachel Getting Married."
"We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland," said Weinstein in a statement. "I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role."
After catching her first big break in 2001's "The Princess Diaries," Hathaway has quickly become one of Hollywood's top rising stars, with roles in such films as "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Devil Wears Prada."
Garland signed with MGM as a teenager and quickly rose to stardom as Dorothy in 1939's "The Wizard of Oz," in which she sang the Oscar-winning ballad "Over the Rainbow." She tragically died in 1969 at the age of 47 from an accidental drug overdose.
