HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Raffaello Follieri, the ex-boyfriend of actress Anne Hathaway, wants his prison sentence reduced.
According to The Associated Press, the 30-year-old Italian businessman wants to serve only three years in prison instead of the more than four years that he originally agreed to. The announcement comes after Follieri pleaded guilty last month to wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.
On Tuesday, Follieri's attorney, Flora Edwards, filed papers in a Manhattan federal court, arguing that the star's former lover had good intentions when he created a business to buy property from the Catholic Church, AP says.
In her filing, Edwards says Follieri "became intoxicated with it all" while fraternizing among the rich and famous. That led him to misuse the money of others in order to maintain the same lavish lifestyle, AP says.
Follieri is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 23.
Hathaway ended her four-year romance with Follieri shortly before his arrest. In August, she told Britain's The Independent that she still longs to walk down the aisle someday.
"I've always wanted a family," she said. "I'm not one of those people who says 'What's the point of marriage?' (I'd like to) find someone you can be yourself around, who makes you laugh, who challenges you in a good way, and where you just speak off each other."
