HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Time will tell, but J.J. Abrams just might be introducing viewers to his latest discovery in Australian actress Anna Torv.
Abrams has tabbed Torv for the lead role in "Fringe," his upcoming sci-fi drama for Fox. Blair Brown and Jasika Nicole also have joined the cast.
Written by Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the two-hour "Fringe" pilot focuses on a young female FBI agent (Torv) who is forced to confront the spread of unexplained phenomena and work with Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), an institutionalized scientist whose work might be at the center of a coming storm. The scientist's estranged son also figures heavily into the action.
Brown will play the role of Nina Cord, a 16-year veteran at the cutting-edge research facility Prometheus Corp. Nicole will play the recurring role of a federal assistant named Astrid.
The three join the previously-announced cast of Noble, Lance Reddick and Kirk Acevedo.
Abrams has a history of introducing new female stars, having cast Keri Russell on "Felicity," Jennifer Garner on "Alias" and Evangeline Lilly on "Lost."
A newcomer to the U.S., Torv has co-starred on several TV series in her homeland, including "Mistresses," "The Secret Life of Us," "McLeod's Daughter's" and "Young Lions."
She is also currently the voice of Nariko in the game "Heavenly Sword."
