HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Avril Lavigne has apologized to her fans after they were left fuming when the pop star abruptly cancelled two concerts, thanks to a case of acute laryngitis.
An outcry began when fans arrived Wednesday night for the singer's concert at San Diego State University's Cox Arena, only to discover that the show had been cancelled with no advance warning. Lavigne was also forced to cancel a show scheduled for the following night in Phoenix, Ariz.
"I have been sick this whole tour, and now I have lost my voice," Lavigne wrote on her official Web site Thursday. "I have never canceled a show in my whole career and just had to for the first time ever. This sux!"
"I am so sorry! I have been on the road for 60 days straight," she continued. "I have had the flu 3 times and I never get sick, it just keeps going around. I think I am just run down. I just played 4 shows in a row in Texas (which is a lot for the vocals) and woke up in Vegas Tuesday with no voice. I thought I was gonna have to cancel that show, but I made it through.....barely! I still went on stage in Vegas and gave it my all, but unfortunately its interfering with my throat now. I had to eliminate songs."
Lavigne said that after surviving Vegas, she quickly realized she'd never be able to take the stage in San Diego.
"I woke up [Wednesday] and knew I wouldn't be able to sing [that] night. My voice is so shot," she said.
Lavigne's "Best Damn Tour" has been plagued by poor ticket sales, leading some to speculate that played a factor in the cancelled shows, which were not rescheduled.
The "Girlfriend" singer's tour is scheduled to resume on May 26 in the U.K.
