HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — After handing out his final rose and proposing to Melissa Rycroft in the "Bachelor" finale, Jason Mesnick pulled a shocker by breaking up with her six weeks later in a taped "After the Final Rose" special. His reasoning: he's still in love with Molly Malaney, the woman he sent home in the final rose ceremony.
The drama played out last night on ABC, with Mesnick telling the 25-year-old Rycroft in the "After the Final Rose" special, "we're not right for reach other." The 32-year-old single father told People he wanted to break up with the former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader in private, but his contract with the show left him with no choice.
"I'm not proud of what I had to do," he said. "If I could have, I would have seen Melissa the night before. It killed me. It kills me now."
After saying goodbye to Rycroft, "Bachelor" host Chris Harrison brought out the 24-year-old Malaney, who admitted to still having feelings for Mesnick. Upon learning about what had transpired, a shocked Malaney agreed to "see where things go" with Mesnick.
"There was part of me that wanted things to work out with Melissa so bad," Mesnick told People. "But the whole other piece was I had these crazy feelings for Molly."
