Singer Billy Joel and his third wife, Katie Lee, have split, the couple revealed Wednesday.

"After nearly five years of marriage Billy Joel & Katie Lee Joel have decided to separate," read a joint statement from the couple released by their reps. "This decision is a result of much thoughtful consideration. Billy & Katie remain caring friends with admiration and respect for each other."

Joel, 60, and Katie Lee, 27, were married in September 2004. Their sunset wedding was held at Joel's 15-acre waterfront Center Island estate in Long Island.

It was the third trip to the altar for Joel, who was previously married to Christie Brinkley (1985-94) and Elizabeth Weber (1973-82).

The marriage was the first for the much younger Katie Lee, a culinary pro who hosted the first season of Bravo TV's "Top Chef."
