VANCOUVER, Canada — Thank you for not smoking.
That was the message to fans braving the cold for Wednesday's night sold-out "Circus" tour stop in Vancouver.
Three songs into her performance at GM Place, Britney Spears disappeared from sight and left fans wondering if the pop star was experiencing either a wardrobe malfunction or an untimely meltdown. After nearly 15 minutes of waiting, the curious crowd finally discovered what the heart of the issue was.
"It's become uncomfortable and unsafe for the performers, including Ms. Spears," said the public address announcer amidst a background chorus of boos. "The show will resume as soon as the air around the stage is clear."
True to her word, the 27-year-old singer resumed the show as soon as the smoke had settled, which happened to be about 30 minutes later. A statement was later posted on her official Web site apologizing for the delay.
"We want to apologize to all the fans who attended our Vancouver show tonight for the brief pause in Britney's set," read the statement. "Crew members above the stage became ill due to a ventilation issue."
Spears is back in action tonight with a show at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Wash.
