HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Britney Spears may be in the midst of a comeback, but the folks at PETA wish she'd leave the animals out of it.
On Monday, the animal rights organization condemned the pop star for using "cruelly trained lions and elephants" in her latest music video, "Circus."
The group claims they wrote Spears and explained "how trainers shock, whip, and beat exotic animals into performing."
PETA argues that the organizations that provided the lions and elephants for the video, Steve Martin's Working Wildlife and Have Trunk Will Travel, respectively, both have long histories of exploiting animals.
"Britney may think her life is a circus, but for the animals who are whipped, chained, and beaten to perform under the real big top, the cruelty is very real," said PETA Director Debbie Leahy in a statement. "She may be headed for a comeback, but when it comes to animals, she still can't get her act together."
The new video is the title track off of Spears' sixth studio album, which was released last week on her 27th birthday.
