HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Britney Spears has rejected a plea deal and is expected to stand trial next week for driving without a license, her attorney announced on Wednesday.
In the plea offer, Spears would have paid a $150 fine and been placed on a year's probation, in exchange for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.
Spears' attorney is claiming unfair treatment due to the pop star's celebrity status.
"It should be an infraction. It's kind of mind-boggling that they want to convict her of a misdemeanor," attorney J. Michael Flanagan tells the Los Angeles Times.
The case stems from an August 2007 incident in which the 26-year-old singer struck a parked car and then proceeded to leave the scene of the accident.
A hit-and-run charge was later dismissed after Spears compensated the other driver.
A trial date has been set for Oct. 15.
