HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Bruno worked his magic at the box office, but his presence at the top is likely a short stay.
Sacha Baron Cohen's latest movie, "Bruno," debuted with $30.4 million in ticket sales to take the top spot at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
Cohen's alter ego, a Gay Austrian fashion designer, narrowly outdistanced "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which finished second with $28.5 million.
After two straight weekends at the top, Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" dropped to third with $24.2 million. However, the action film starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox raised its three-week domestic total to $339.2 million, surpassing the $319 million generated by 2007's "Transformers."
"Public Enemies" ($14.1 million) and "The Proposal" ($10.5 million) rounded out the top five.
While "Bruno" topped the opening weekend for Cohen's 2006 sleeper hit "Borat," it showed signs of little staying power with a dramatic drop from Friday to Saturday. Not to mention, trouble is on the way in the form of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which arrives in theaters this week.
