HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds has checked into rehab.
The 73-year-old actor is seeking treatment for an addiction to prescription drugs, his manager revealed Wednesday.
"After a recent back surgery, Mr. Reynolds felt like he was going through hell and after a while, realized he was a prisoner of prescription pain pills," read a statement from the manager. "He checked himself into rehab in order to regain control of his life."
"Mr. Reynolds hopes his story will help others in a similar situation," continued the statement. "He hopes they will not try to solve the problem by themselves, but realize that sometimes it is too tough to do on their own and they should seek help, as he did."
The "Smokey and the Bandit" star most recently appeared on a handful of "My Name is Earl" episodes.
In May, Reynolds spoke out after the death of his longtime movie companion Dom DeLuise.
"I was thinking the other day about this. As you get older you think about this more and more, I was dreading this moment," he said. "Dom always made everyone feel better when he was around. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I will miss him very much."
