LOS ANGELES - Hollywood stars Kirk Douglas and Harrison Ford donned aprons and grabbed serving spoons on Wednesday to help dish out Thanksgiving dinners to the Los Angeles homeless.
Douglas, 90, was joined by "Indiana Jones" star Ford and a bevy of other celebrities, who joined volunteers at the annual feast at downtown's Los Angeles Mission, doling out turkey drumsticks, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, vegetables and pumpkin pie.
It was the third year in a row that Douglas, the star of such Hollywood classics as "Spartacus" and "Ulysses," has hosted the annual charity event at the downtown shelter and the Anne Douglas Center for Women.
Douglas thanked fellow celebrities and public figures such as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for supporting the event.
"It is inspiring to see the actors and politicians come and help serve," Douglas said. "Their involvement will help their souls as much as it helps the guests being served."
Other celebrities in attendance on Wednesday included Ford's partner, "Ally McBeal" star Calista Flockhart, actress Nia Long and "The Hills" reality TV star Spencer Pratt.
"It's very grounding," said Long, who dished out vegetables and rolls with her 7-year-old son. "I feel grateful for all the things I have."
The air of festivity sparkled in contrast to the harshness of Skid Row, where hunger is the norm and sleeping bags dot the sidewalks. According to official figures released earlier this year, Los Angeles remains the United States homeless capital with more than 40,000 people sleeping rough every night.
Douglas, who helped develop the mission's Anne Douglas Center for Women, noted the event's affect on celebrities.
"Their involvement will help their souls as much as it helps the guests being served," he said in a mission press release.
