HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are high on plans to light up again.
On Wednesday, the longtime comics announced their first comedy tour in more than 25 years, doing so from the Troubadour in West Hollywood, the same venue they were discovered in 1970.
"Cheech & Chong: Light Up America ..." will stop in 22 cities around United States, kicking off on Sept. 12 in Philadelphia and wrapping up on Dec. 20 in Denver.
Marin and Chong released nine comedy albums between 1972 and 1985, earning four Grammy Award nominations along the way, including a best comedy recording win for 1973's "Los Cochinos." They also starred in eight feature films, beginning with 1978's "Up in Smoke."
The duo had a well-publicized split shortly after the release of their 1985 album, "Get Out of My Room," which was caused by their own success, according to Chong.
"What happens if you don't have big problems, like trying to make it — when that's cured when you've made it — then your little problems become your big problems," he told reporters. "So you start fighting over stupid things."
"We've gotten to the age where we don't feel like fighting anymore," added Marin, "because the end is a lot closer than the beginning."
With their old wounds apparently healed, the comedy team said they are looking forward to their newest journey together.
"This is a moment that I've been looking forward to for many, many years because we have such a legacy and history together that we couldn't escape it, even if we tried," said Chong.
