NEW YORK — Sarah Palin's much-hyped appearance on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend did nothing to impress one of the show's all-time greats in Chevy Chase.
Speaking to Access Hollywood at Sunday's Give Food a Chance benefit in New York, the former "SNL" cast member said the Republican vice presidential nominee failed to deliver.
"Quite frankly, it's a big mistake to let her go on," Chase told Access.
The 65-year-old Chase, who was an original cast member when "SNL" debuted in 1975, said series honcho Lorne Michaels definitely didn't make things any easier.
"What was brilliant about Lorne was that he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!" he said.
Palin appeared in two skits over the weekend, but the "Vacation" star said the Alaskan governor failed the most when she couldn't deliver during "Weekend Update."
"That was her big chance," said Chase. "Nothing."
Chase went on to tell Access that Republican presidential nominee John McCain should have put his foot down and not allowed Palin to appear on the show.
“The management behind McCain's campaign has been dumb," he explained. "This has only helped accentuate the problem of his judgment in choosing, in such a cynical way, a candidate like Sarah Palin for vice president. I think the last thing that they would want right about now is to have the rest of America knowing all that… to have her be seen on 'SNL,' certainly never there. If anything, you just want her to be seen just from a distance."
"I'm sure she's very bright," the comedian added. "But so is the Butterworth woman."
