HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Comedian Robert Schimmel was arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulted his wife, Melissa.
According to The Associated Press, police took the 59-year-old comic into custody after the pair got into a fight early Saturday at their home in Calabasas, Calif.
Schimmel was booked for investigation of spousal assault and later released on $50,000 bail, AP said.
A native of the Bronx, Schimmel is perhaps best known for his HBO stand-up comedy shows. He is also a regular guest on Howard Stern's radio show.
Schimmel has experienced his share of health problems over the years. In 1998, he suffered a heart attack and two years later he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Last year, the comic released the memoir "Cancer on $5 a Day," which chronicles his battle with the disease.
The X-rated comic married his wife, a friend of his daughter's who is half his age, shortly after his cancer went into remission. It was his second marriage.
