HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Dakota Fanning has a unique way of avoiding the pitfalls of fame at an early age.
"I get my rebellion out through my movies," the 15-year-old actress tells Teen Vogue. "I'm boring in that way. I enjoy having a normal life."
Part of that normal life includes attending a private school in Los Angeles, where Fanning insists she is treated just like everyone else.
"I started there in the ninth grade, and they were pretty receptive to me right away," says Fanning, who at age 7 became the youngest person ever nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for her role opposite Sean Penn in I Am Sam. "I really wanted a home base, because I feel like no matter how old people are, they remember homecoming. They remember their senior prom. And I really wanted that."
While she loves her school, Fanning admits that dating is a challenge — she's only gone out with "one boy."
"I have a small class, so the pool is very limited," the varsity cheerleader says of the dating scene. "Everyone kind of knows everyone."
When it comes to her career, Fanning is thrilled about the opportunity to join the cast of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
"I read all four Twilight books in one week," she says. "It's such a phenomenon, and I wanted to be able to say that I was a part of it."
The role also allowed Fanning the chance to bond with Kristen Stewart before the pair shot The Runaways, a biopic movie that tells the story of the 1970s all-girls band.
"We became really close," Fanning says, "like we'd known each other for our whole lives. We talk all the time."
Of course, growing close made for some challenges on the New Moon set as Fanning portrayed the evil vampire Jane.
Says Fanning: "I've never been such an evil character, and because I do know Kristen so well, being mean to her was really weird. It's like, Sorry, dude!"
