HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Magician David Copperfield is being sued by a woman who claims the magician sexually assaulted her.
The woman, a 22-year-old fashion model and former Miss Washington USA contestant, filed the lawsuit on July 29 in U.S. District Court in Seattle, the Seattle Times reports.
In her suit, the Seattle resident claims Copperfield sexually assaulted and threatened her while she was a guest on his private island in the Bahamas. She says she met Copperfield during a January 2007 performance in Kennewick, in which he called her on stage.
The lawsuit was filed against David Seth Kotkin (Copperfield's given name) and came on the deadline for a two-year statute of limitations, the newspaper said.
Copperfield's lawyers Angelo Calfo and Patty Eakes have since denied the allegations, saying that the lawsuit is "extortion for money, plain and simple."
