HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Drew Barrymore says her life has taken a positive turn despite her July split with actor Justin Long.
"My priorities have changed so much," the 33-year-old star reveals in the November issue of Harper's Bazaar. "I've been single for months now and I've turned my attention toward my passions, my friends, and the causes I believe in. It's been about learning who I am, not through a man, but for myself."
Barrymore has been involved in a few high-profile relationships ever since her 2001 divorce from comedian Tom Green. In 2002, she began dating The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti. The couple split last year after five years together.
"I've had a couple of fun, frolicky relationships, but really, I got out of a five-year relationship and I dated a few people here and there," says Barrymore, who has also been linked to director Spike Jonze.
Barrymore says that in addition to "spending time with my friends and doing more traveling with the U.N.," she's also been "challenging" herself on the job.
"I'm so happy with where my priorities are right now," says Barrymore, who will soon make her directorial debut in the feature film "Whip It!," in which she stars alongside Ellen Page.
Another main focus for the "E.T." star is the upcoming presidential election. Barrymore confesses to being a Democrat for the first time and tells the magazine that party nominee Barack Obama has her excited about the future.
"When I heard him speak about a gay person never having to sit outside the hospital room with their loved one sick inside, I burst into tears because so many people I care about are homosexual and it was profound to have someone be sensitive to that," she says of Obama. "That's the kind of world I want to live in, where we're not holding our own principles in judgment above someone or against someone."
