HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Ellen Page has signed on to portray Jane Eyre in the latest adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
BBC Films will be developing the production, which was written by Moira Buffini. The project has yet to select a director.
Bronte's 1847 classic tells the epic love story of a governess and her master, Edward Rochester. It is one of the most filmed English novels in history.
The last film adaptation was directed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1996.
Joan Fontaine, Susannah York and Charlotte Gainsbourg are among the actresses who have portrayed the lead character over the years.
The role will be the first period piece for the 21-year-old Page, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance in the teen-pregnancy film "Juno."
Page has already lined up several roles since her nomination, including the roller-derby comedy "Whip It!," which marks Drew Barrymore's directorial debut. The Canadian-born actress is also on board for the thriller film "Peacock."
