Etta James Bashes Beyonce for Singing 'At Last'

By Chloe Bunker on February 5, 2009

Etta JamesHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Music legend Etta James didn't mince words when it came to discussing her feelings for Beyoncé.

Appearing in concert on Jan. 28 in Seattle, James lashed out at the music star for singing her signature song, "At Last," at Barack Obama's Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.

"I tell you, that woman he has singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her a-- whipped," James told the crowd. "The great Beyoncé ... I can't stand Beyoncé. She had no business up there singing ... my song that I've been singing forever."

The apparent feud comes on the heels of Beyoncé earning rave reviews for her portrayal of James in the film "Cadillac Records" last year, not to mention the irony in that "At Last" isn't even a James original. The song was first performed by Glenn Miller and his orchestra in 1941, followed by Nat King Cole in 1957. James went on to debut her version four years later.

The feud would appear to be one-sided, with Beyoncé having expressed her adoration for James at the "Cadillac" premiere last November.

"She's a living legend and I want her to love the movie, and I hope she does," Beyoncé told Access Hollywood.
