HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Eva Mendes and Josh Hartnett have signed on to star in the drug-trafficking drama "Queen of the South," Variety reports.
Ben Kingsley will also star in the film, which is an adaptation of a novel by Spanish writer Arturo Perez-Reverte.
According to Variety, the story revolves around a Mexican woman (Mendes) who flees to Spain after her drug-running boyfriend is murdered. She soon becomes the country's top drug smuggler as she seeks to avenge her ex-lover's death.
Hartnett will star as a Marine who crosses her path, while Kingsley will portray a Russian businessman.
The film is scheduled to begin shooting this September in Mexico and Spain.
Mendes, 34, most recently starred in "We Own the Night" and "Ghost Rider," while the 29-year-old Hartnett last appeared on screen in "30 Days of Night."
