CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Idol champ Fantasia Barrino was "slowly losing consciousness" late Monday when she overdosed on aspirin and a sleep aid, according to a 911 call tape obtained by TMZ.
The unidentified caller, who was outside the singer's North Carolina home, tells the emergency dispatcher that Fantasia was placed in the shower to try "to keep her awake."
The operator then instructs the caller to remove the 26-year-old star from the shower. When asked if Fantasia is breathing, the caller responds, "Yes."
The incident was classified as a suicide attempt by local police. It happened just hours after Fantasia's personal life made headlines with news she's been involved with a married man named Antwaun Cook. The man's wife, Paula Cook, filed a complaint last Wednesday in Mecklenburg County District Court, accusing the twosome of having an affair and making sex tapes of their adventures together.
Fantasia remains hospitalized, but is expected to make a full recovery, her manager, Brian Dickens, said Tuesday.
"Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time," said Dickens. "Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon."
