HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — "Fast & Furious" revved up its engine and dusted the competition over the weekend, topping the box office with a $72.5 million debut, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The fourth installment of the "Fast and the Furious" series outlasted last week's top film, "Monsters vs. Aliens," which slipped to second place at $33.5 million.
"The Haunting in Connecticut" finished third with sales of $9.6 million.
"Fast & Furious" features the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. The film follows 2006's "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."
