NEW YORK — Troubled former NBA star Jayson Williams was injured in a car accident early Tuesday when he apparently crashed his SUV into a tree in New York City, the Associated Press reports.
Police arrived on the scene and discovered Williams in the passenger seat, however witnesses said he was driving the black Mercedes when it crashed after exiting FDR Drive in Manhattan around 3:15 a.m., AP said.
Williams is expected to face DUI charges, authorities said.
While most media outlets have said his injuries were minor, TMZ is reporting that Williams suffered a broken neck in the accident.
The former New Jersey Nets star has encountered several legal problems since retiring from the NBA after 10 seasons in 1999. Among his woes is a retrial that he is awaiting on manslaughter charges stemming from the shooting death of his limousine driver in 2002.
