NASHVILLE — Garth Brooks is planning a comeback.
The top-selling country artist is coming out of retirement after a nine-year hiatus to spend more time with his children.
"I know this is a young industry, so I'm not sure I'll be welcomed back but, if the fans want me, I still want to pursue my music," the 47-year-old singer told reporters Thursday at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.
It is widely believed that Brooks will hold a second press conference this afternoon in Las Vegas, where he'll reveal an extended performance run at the Wynn Resort.
Brooks retired after dominating the music industry for more than a decade, beginning with his debut self-titled album in 1989. During the course of his run, Brooks won two Grammys, 17 American Music Awards and 11 Country Music Association trophies. In 2007, he surpassed Elvis to become the top-selling solo artist in U.S. history. His 113 albums sold place him second to only the Beatles in all-time U.S. sales.
Brooks has three daughters — Taylor, August and Allie Colleen — with his ex-wife. The former couple divorced in 2000 and Brooks married fellow country star Trisha Yearwood five years later.
