HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Misty May-Treanor officially dropped out of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" on Monday after suffering an injury last week.
The two-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist was injured Friday while rehearsing with her dance partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She is expected to undergo surgery later this week for a ruptured Achilles tendon.
"I'm out and I'm really bummed," May-Treanor told People. "We don't know why these things happen. They could happen to anyone. I feel like I was only just beginning here."
Chmerkovskiy was just as disappointed, telling Us Weekly that his partner's early exit "sucks."
"I'm a tough guy, and I've been around injuries before, so I know what it's like," he told the magazine.
"You would almost rather it happened to you," he added. "It's a freak occurrence — it had nothing to do with this competition, nothing to do with her shoes. It's a wear and tear on her body from 20 years of volleyball."
Despite the setback, the volleyball star promised she will return stronger than ever, perhaps even on the hit ABC show again.
“I will be back — on the volleyball court and maybe on the ballroom," she told People. "I would come back to the ballroom if they asked me back."
