HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Janet Jackson says she received plenty of support from Tyler Perry when her brother Michael died last June while she was shooting the director's upcoming movie, Why Did I Get Married Too?
"He actually stopped production and was there for me," the 43-year-old star told People at the film's Monday night premiere in New York City. "[He was] constantly calling me, making sure I was OK, making sure that there wasn't anything that I needed or my family needed."
He is "such a sweetheart," Jackson added, "so giving and so loving."
Perry told Jackson there was no rush to return to the film's Bahamas set, even giving her the option to take several weeks off is she needed it — an offer the superstar refused.
"Once I spoke to her and found out that she was at a place of strength and going to be with her family, I felt safe enough to know that she was going to be OK," he told the mag.
Jackson's return was a welcome sight for Perry, who said her emotions translated into an incredible performance.
"I think that a lot of times, people are not able to release," explained Perry. "They don't have a way to let go. And that's the great thing about having a film like this, where she got to do all of these crazy things. And I think all of [her] emotion is in the film, I really do."
Why Did I Get Married Too? hits theaters on April 2.
