HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — January Jones has made it big in Hollywood, despite being told by Ashton Kutcher to give up her dream.
"[He] was not supportive of my acting," the 31-year-old actress says of her ex-boyfriend in the latest issue of GQ. "He was like, 'I don't think you're going to be good at this.' So — f--- you!"
But if you think Jones is holding a grudge, think again. In fact, she credits Kutcher for giving her the motivation to prove him wrong.
"He only has nice things to say now – if anything, I should thank him," she says. "Because the minute you tell me I can't do something, that's when I'm most motivated."
The Mad Men star also owes a big thank you to her brief fling with modeling, which led to an epiphany while she was working in Paris and visited the gravesite of Doors frontman Jim Morrison.
"You're like an object. They move you around. And I felt like, God, I'm miserable. I hate modeling," recalls Jones, who modeled for the likes of Abercrombie and Fitch. "When I moved back to New York, the agency said I owed them $20,000. So I left the agency and then—very quickly—decided to go to L.A. and try acting. Without any training."
The South Dakota native dated Kutcher soon after she landed on the West Coast. She later had another high-profile romance with singer Josh Groban, but has since moved on to dating a friend she's known for eight years, a lawyer from Oregon. At one point during the interview, Jones grabs the recorder and proclaims: "Dear men of America, I like beer, I like football. I'm probably the most interesting girl you'll ever meet."
"What I want is James Brolin in Amityville Horror, minus the horror," she says. "A guy with a beard who can swing an ax."
