HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Just weeks after engagement rumors began to surface, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have reportedly gone their separate ways.
According to the U.K's Mirror, Mayer pulled the plugged on the relationship, leaving Aniston still in search of her soul mate after her 2005 divorce from Brad Pitt.
"There's been a bit of tension for some time," a source close to 30-year-old singer tells the publication. "They initially opted for a break, hoping a trial split might make them stronger. Sadly it doesn't seem to have worked.
"John took the decision to end things as he felt he just wasn't ready for the level of commitment that Jennifer deserved."
While the source said Aniston wasn't in a rush to marry, they did say her desire to eventually start a family may have weighed in the couple's falling out.
"She did want to set a timetable for their future together," the source explained. "She also wanted him to assure her he would cut down his tours in the future when they did eventually have children."
The couple had been nearly inseparable since going public with their relationship in April, with the 39-year-old Aniston becoming a fixture on her beau's ongoing concert tour.
Many had speculated that an engagement was forthcoming, perhaps even before the actress started promoting her upcoming film "Management," which is due in theaters on Sept. 19.
The breakup continues a string of fallen romances for the former "Friends" star, who has dated actor Vince Vaughn and model Paul Sculfor in recent years.
Mayer's pal said it was unlikely the couple would reunite.
"They have spoken on the phone since the split and are trying to remain on good terms," the source told the Mirror. "But unless John has a dramatic change of heart, it's unlikely they'll rekindle their romance."
