HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — It isn't every day that you meet the person you grew up idolizing, let alone they live up to your expectations. Such was the case when Jennifer Aniston suddenly found herself standing next to Barbra Streisand at a New Year's party a few years ago.
"I've loved her since I was a kid, and all of a sudden there she is, and she's just like someone you've always known," Aniston, 41, tells the September issue of Harper's Bazaar. "You know when you meet people you idolize and then you walk away from the conversation thinking, 'Well, that was a disappointment; they were kinder and more fabulous in my mind'? Well, she was wonderful, and you could talk to her about anything."
The former Friends star laughs when she recalls how Streisand excused herself when the clock struck midnight to kiss husband James Brolin. The couple then planted a joint smooch on Aniston. Now the actress is getting a chance to channel Streisand in Harper's Bazaar. During her photo shoot at a Los Angeles theater, she listened to Streisand's 1964 signature song, "People," to help set the mood.
"I have no idea what people are going to think about it," Aniston says of the shoot, in which she donned outfits inspired by Streisand's wardrobe in two of her bigger movie hits, Funny Girl and What’s Up, Doc? "Everybody has an opinion; it's just what people love to have. But that's okay. Art is so subjective, and people can react however they want."
Aniston says the two stars actually have a lot in common, including their love for interior design. But it's Streisand's career that she admires the most.
"Barbra inspires me because there isn't anything she hasn't done that she wanted to do, especially as a female in the time when her generation was prime," she explains. "She's a true renaissance woman."
