HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey are both back on the singles market, but the odds are slim that the pair will ever rekindle their old flames.
“It won’t happen,” a Simpson family friend tells People of the chances for a reconciliation between the ex-couple, whose divorce was finalized in 2006. “Jessica has no respect for him. There is way too much bad blood between Nick and Joe for Jessica to even think about it.”
The 35-year-old Lachey split with his longtime girlfriend, Vanessa Minnillo, in June, while Simpson’s romance with football star Tony Romo fizzled last week. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback reportedly dumped Simpson last Thursday, the night before 29th birthday.
“Jessica was really blindsided,” a source tells the mag. “She’s sad, mad, and confused. Her emotions are all over the place.”
“He wanted this perfect mold of the perfect football girlfriend,” adds another source. “People don’t realize that Jessica has been worn down by Hollywood. She has insecurities and inner demons that she struggles with. She’s not some upbeat blond cheerleader that people want her to be.”
While Simpson and Romo endured their fair share of bumps over the years, the couple’s sudden breakup did come as a surprise to those closest to the pair.
“Dating her comes along with her celebrity and press – that’s not easy for anyone,” says the Simpson family friend. “But she and Tony seemingly had it figured out. They rolled with the punches and focused on each other. They just lost sight of that at the end.”
