GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An emotional period has perhaps taken its toll on Jessica Simpson, as the star struggled through a bizarre performance Thursday while opening for the Rascal Flatts in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Simpson, whose alleged weight gain has been front and center in the tabloids, reportedly forgot lyrics and nearly broke down in tears during her 38-minute performance at the Van Andel Arena.
"My voice is weak tonight and I feel so vulnerable onstage," Simpson admitted to the crowd, according to The Grand Rapids Press.
Simpson, who also struggled with her ear piece throughout, even admitted to wishing she could "walk off the stage" at one point.
"It was uncomfortable to watch (her struggle)," one fan told the publication.
While she admittedly suffered through a tough night, most in attendance were quick to defend the 28-year-old singer who has been been a target ever since recent photos suggested she had gained weight.
"I felt bad for her tonight," one concertgoer told the Press. "Magazines are ripping her, being so harsh, and she's gorgeous."
"She didn't look anything like those pictures," added local music station director Dave Taft of the photo controversy. "She looks incredible."
